why recycling electronics is important

In recognition of Earth Day, we want to talk about the importance of recycling electronics. Electronic waste, or e-waste, is one of the fastest-growing types of waste in the world. This is mostly because technology advances so quickly and many people replace their devices more often than ever before.
The good news is that there are things you can do to recycle your old electronics responsibly!
Here at Ecycle Atlanta, it’s Earth Day every day. In this article, we will discuss why recycling electronics is important and how you can go about doing it!
It was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental opportunity for growth, and it is now the world’s largest secular calendar event.
The first Earth Day was a huge success and is believed to have led to several important environmental protections, including The Clean Air Act, Endangered Species Act, and Water Quality Improvement Act.
In Atlanta, Earth Day is celebrated with a festival at Atlanta Botanical Garden.
The annual Earth Day Festival in Piedmont Park is also a celebration of our environment, sustainability, and conservation efforts across metro Atlanta.

earth day, every day
Earth Day is a day to celebrate our planet and everything on it. It’s a time to come together and think about how we can make small changes in our everyday lives that will have a big impact on the environment.
According to Do Something.Org, just 12.5 percent of e-waste is currently recycled. However, for every 1 million cellphones that are recycled, over 35,000 pounds of copper, over 700 pounds of silver, and 75 pounds of gold can be harvested!

At Ecycle Atlanta, it’s Earth Day, Every Day. We believe that it is important to recycle your e-waste responsibly all year long and not just for a few weeks out of the year.

Recycling Tips

Ecycle Atlanta's
Earth Day

It can be hard for some of our clients and friends to know where to start. So we’ve put together this checklist, especially for Earth Day, to help!
Here are some tips on how to recycle your old electronics:

What is e-waste?

E-waste refers to the electronic devices that have reached their end of life. Cellphones, computers, and other IT equipment are just a few examples of e-waste.
These items often contain hazardous materials like lead and mercury, which can be dangerous to the environment if not disposed of properly.
By recycling electronics instead of making more new ones, and by reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases, we can reduce the volume of hazardous materials in the air and environment.

Ecycle Atlanta's Mission

Ecycle Atlanta is on a mission to keep these hazardous materials out of our landfills and off our streets. We work year-round to promote responsible recycling practices for all.
That’s why it’s important to recycle your old electronics! By doing so, you’re preventing these materials from entering landfills and harming our planet.
what types of technology

can be recycled?

It might surprise you how many different types of electronics can be recycled! You may know that items such as cellphones, laptops, and personal computers can be recycled.
However, some of the more unusual things we’ve recycled include hospital equipment, walkie-talkies, fitness trackers, and even typewriters!
Thankfully, even technology that is broken beyond repair can be taken apart and the component parts recycled.
The same goes for servers, routers, and other surplus IT equipment as well. The best way to find out if your device is eligible for free recycling is by checking our long list of items of recyclable electronics.
Make sure to check this list for your Earth Day recycling.
